Ian Watts

As an audio engineer, Ian began recording his band at the age of 13 with a 4 track recorder borrowed from his dad. This progressed over the years to multitrack tape and digital recording of bands in his home town town of Sacramento. When he moved to Portland in 2005 and opened The Magic Closet, he immediately began working with many talented local, regional, and international artists in a variety of genres. He is now one of the most sought after local engineers, known for having a great ear and a very easy going personality.  As a musician, Ian still actively tours with his band and writes and produces his own music.

John Neff

John Neff has been a professional in the sound industry since making his first record in 1965.

Over the years John has been a performer, composer/songwriter, arranger, session musician, producer, engineer, scoring engineer and television and motion picture engineer/re-recording mixer.

He was David Lynch’s chief engineer and studio manager for over eight years and recorded the scores for and mixed the theatrical and DVD releases of the Academy Award nominated films, “The Straight Story” and “Mulholland Drive”. He also remixed all of Lynch’s films except ‘Dune’ and ‘Lost Highway’ in 5.1 surround for their respective DVD releases, including “Eraserhead”, “The Elephant Man”, “Blue Velvet”, “Wild At Heart”, and “TwinPeaks: Fire, Walk With Me”. He did location sound recording and music composition/recording/mixing for “Inland Empire”.

John and David Lynch have an album out together called “BlueBOB”, and co-wrote, recorded and performed the theme for the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, “Cannes Memory”. John also has original music in the films “The Straight Story”, Mulholland Drive”, “Inland Empire”, “Dark Reel”, and the new feature film “Spreading Darkness”.

He is originally from Detroit, and had two 45 rpm singles and an album out before 1970 there, and became a session guitarist for the legendary Motown/Stax producer Don Davis at United Sound Studios in Detroit. He played on almost two hundred non-Motown Soul and R&B records, including artists Johnny Nash (“I Can See Clearly Now”), Johnny Taylor, The Dells, Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Junior Walker, Billy Paul (“Me And Mrs. Jones”), Mary Wells and many others.

John lived and worked in Toronto in the mid 70s, then Phoenix and LA in the late 70s, where he recorded and toured with Steppenwolf and Hoyt Axton. He moved to Maui, Hawaii in 1979, where he did a 9 year morning radio show, built a studio and started a Hawaiian record label. In 1989, he built a large studio in Maui with Walter Becker of  Steely Dan, where he worked with such artists as Donald Fagen, Buffy Ste. Marie, Willie Nelson, Sinead O’Connor and others.

1993 saw a move back to the Mainland, where he started a studio technical design firm in LA with legendary studio architects ‘studio bau:ton’. Clients included Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, 20th Century Fox film studios (John designed ‘The Simpsons’ ADR studio there), Jeff Bridges, Ice T, Musicians Institute, David Lynch and others.

2005 saw a move from Hollywood to Marin County, where John developed a 20 acre parcel across from Skywalker Ranch into a world class studio property. While in Marin, John worked with Mike Pinder and Tony Clarke of The Moody Blues, Michael Franti, Journey, Sammy Hagar, Paul Thorn, Narada Michael Walden, Keith England (Allman Bros.) and more. He also started mixing independent Feature Films, both at the legendary Plant Studios in Sausalito and at his private Tomales Bay studio.

In 2011 John relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he has established himself as a music producer/engineer, mastering engineer and film score engineer/mixer and feature film re-recording mixer. He has appeared in and worked on the NBC TV show “Grimm”, and recorded dialog for “Leverage”, as well as playing on jingles for such clients as The Microsoft Store and Gamefly. He maintains a separate personal studio in North Portland, and brings the mighty 96 channel Euphonix CS-3000 console to The Magic Closet.

In closing, John has received Gold and Platinum album awards, Na Hoku Hawaiian music awards, a Canadian Juno Best Album award, French Best Foreign Artist award, Ampex ‘Golden Reel’ award, and been nominated for Grammys and two ‘Oscar’ Academy awards.

Tony Lash

I was born in Portland, Oregon, a lovely city which I still call home.

In addition to my studio work, I’ve enjoyed performing with some pretty great bands, including Heatmiser, Sunset Valley, James Angell, Kaitlyn ni Donovan.

I have had the fortune and honor of working with many talented musicians over the years. My continuing goal is to help bring the heart of a song to the listener.
